To anyone immersed in the “X-Men Universe” Hugh Jackman will always be Wolverine, a role he played in seven movies. But there’s more to this Australian actor than mutant bone claws and mutton chops that would make Elvis envious. Jackman has also starred in over 20 non-superhero films, including Les Misérables, for which he won a Golden Globe. He is also a Tony award-winning Broadway performer—with a winning smile.
With his famed character Logan/Wolverine fading in the rearview mirror, Jackman has returned to his musical roots. He will play Harold Hill in the Broadway revival of The Music Man, set to open in Fall 2020. And since May 2019 he’s been on world tour with Hugh Jackman: The Man. The Music. The Show., featuring Jackman and a supporting cast performing songs from favorite shows and films, including Les Misérables and the 2017 hit The Greatest Showman.
The Show, with 90 planned stops throughout Europe, North America and Oceania, is a decidedly different “universe” from the X-Men. As Wolverine, Jackman could get away with a scruffier look. But performing as Jean Valjean or the bigger-than-life P.T. Barnum, he has to bring a vastly different look to the role, which brings us to Jackman’s teeth…
Once upon a time, Jackman’s teeth were an unflattering gray—definitely not a good look for stage or film. So with the help of his dentist, Jackman set about upgrading his smile with teeth whitening. Teeth whitening is a great way to take a dull, stained smile and turn up the volume on its brightness—and attractiveness—a notch or two. A dentist applies a bleaching solution that stays in contact with the teeth for a few minutes. The process is often aided by special lighting.
A professional application is especially desirable if, like Jackman, you want “Goldilocks” brightness: not too little, not too much, but just right for you. Dentists can precisely control the tint level to get a brighter but more naturally looking white. Of course, you can also get a dazzling “Hollywood” smile if you so desire.
And although the effect of teeth whitening isn’t permanent, a dental application can last a while, depending on how well you manage foods and beverages that stain teeth. With a touchup now and then, you may be able to keep your brighter smile for years before undergoing the full procedure again.
One important note, though: This technique only works with outer enamel staining. If the discoloration originates from within the tooth, the bleaching agent will have to be placed internally, requiring access to the inside of the tooth. An alternative would be porcelain veneers to mask the discoloration, an option that also works when there is ultra-heavy enamel staining.
If you’re tired of your dull smile, talk with us about putting some pizzazz back into it. Teeth whitening could be your way to get a smile worthy of Broadway.

Discover the many ways in which you can get that whiter smile.
A smile that is full of stains and discolorations can certainly be embarrassing, but there are so many options out there to help you achieve that whiter smile that you don’t have to live with yellowing, stained teeth. While teeth whitening will certainly offer you fast and effective results, our Grand Junction, CO, cosmetic dentists Dr. Brandon Berguin, Dr. Kira Funderburk and Dr. William Berguin are here to talk about the many ways in which you can address your dental stains.
If you feel like your smile only needs a little boost then you may find the results you need through at-home whitening products. Whitening toothpastes and even at-home kits can be enough for those only looking to remove minor surface stains. Just make sure to always follow the directions. Of course, it’s necessary to acknowledge that most at-home methods won’t give you fast or dramatic results.
Professional Teeth Whitening
If you are dealing with serious dental stains caused by years of smoking or coffee drinking, then you’ve come to the right place. Our Grand Junction, CO, dentists are ready to help you tackle those stains and yellow teeth to get you a visibly whiter smile. There are two ways in which to do this: in-office whitening and at-home whitening. If you have severe stains and you want to get rid of them quickly then your best option is in-office whitening. Professional whitening actually changes the shade of your teeth. In as little as one session we could get your smile multiple shades whiter.
At-home whitening is also available. Our whitening kit uses customized whitening trays, which ensures more uniform and even whitening, while the whitening gel is stronger and provides better results in a shorter period of time than commercial whitening kits.
Sometimes the stains you have can’t be treated through professional teeth whitening. If stains are too severe, or are internal rather than external, then you will need to turn to other cosmetic options to hide these stains. These porcelain shells are often the best way to cover severe discolorations and other imperfections and to give you a more beautiful smile. Even if teeth whitening isn’t right for you, dental veneers could be.

What are the advantages of professional teeth whitening?
You'll find plenty of teeth whitening products in the dental care aisle at the drugstore or grocery store, but these products don't offer the same results and benefits of professional whitening. When you take advantage of professional whitening, you'll experience:
- Better Results: Depending on the product, some over-the-counter teeth whitening kits don't seem to make much of a difference in your smile, even if you follow the instructions exactly. Your Grand Junction, CO dentist uses professional-strength hydrogen peroxide gel, which isn't available in commercial kits. After professional whitening, you can expect your teeth to be an average of three to eight shades whiter.
- Whiter Teeth While You Wait: Don't want to devote weeks to teeth whitening? In just one one-hour session at your dentist's office, your teeth will be noticeably whiter. Professional teeth whitening is ideal if you don't have time to keep up with a lengthy teeth whitening schedule or know you'll forget when it's time to use your kit again.
What if I prefer whitening at home?
You can take advantage of professional results at your dentist's office or at home. If you prefer, your dentist will create custom whitening trays that you can use at home. You'll simply add a little gel to the trays and follow the recommended whitening schedule.
How does the dentist protect my gums?
Whitening gels and products can irritate your gums and roots, causing pain and sensitivity. Your comfort during and after the teeth whitening process is your dentist's priority. Before the whitening process begins, he or she will apply protective gel to your gums and use retractors to keep your lips or cheeks from coming in contact with the whitener.

Q. Is my smile right for teeth whitening?
A. Many patients are able to enjoy the radiant benefits of whitening, but everyone’s smile and needs are different and unique. If you are looking to remove surface stains caused by consuming certain foods or drinks, or from smoking, then professional in-office teeth whitening in Grand Junction, CO may be right for you.
Your smile must be free of cavities or gum disease before you can get your teeth whitened. Also, take note that while strong, professional whitening gel cannot remove internal stains or remove stains or dullness from dental work like crowns, fillings or bridges.
Q. How long will it take to get teeth whitening?
A. Traditionally, it takes about 45 minutes to get your teeth whitening in our office. This includes three, 15-minute whitening gel applications in which we also use a laser to speed up the process.
If you opt for our at-home kits it may take two or more weeks to start seeing your results.
Q. What is the procedure like?
A. When you come in for teeth whitening we will first clean your teeth thoroughly and then use a separator to expose the surface of your teeth while also protecting gums and sensitive tissue from the bleach.
Then we will apply a layer of gel to your teeth and direct a light beam at your teeth to activate the gel. As we mentioned above, most teeth whitening procedures require three, 15-minute whitening applications in which we will remove the old layer and reapply a new one that we will laser-activate each time.
Q. How long will my results last?
On average, professional whitening results can last anywhere from six months to two years, depending on your oral hygiene and what foods you consume. For those who smoke, drink coffee or wine, or consume a lot of stain-producing foods, their results may not last as long.
Q. Is teeth whitening safe?
Studies have found that teeth whitening is completely safe for your teeth and will not damage enamel, if used properly. By coming into our office for treatment you can expect to get amazing, effective and safe results.
While teeth sensitivity can occur in some patients after whitening, we would be happy to talk to you about ways to reduce sensitivity either before or after your treatment.
